Dawson Brook Falls
If you are looking for a short but pretty stroll after Sunday supper, Dawson Brook Falls might be it,if you live near Hants County or Eastern Kings County. I’m always up to find new trails and waterfalls, so we set out to find this spot inspired by the travels of @newtrailsouthere . Google Maps was up to her old tricks. After taking us to the gated road, she insisted the trail started on our left directly onside the gate. And it did look like a trail, which we followed for short way. Wrong. Unless I am really familiar with a trail-and I mean really, I use a GPS app,…

Morse’s (Moore’s) Brook Falls
More Kings County explorations. This time it’s Morse Brook Falls in New Minas. This is a spot I’ve wanted to find since an acquaintance mentioned it to me…. This is a lovely set of three falls with a spectacular 50 ft one in the middle, and we had the most fun getting there. The far side of the brook is a high rock wall. The trail is about 2 km out and back. Any of the pools beneath the falls are really too shallow to swim. Some accounts I’ve read say it’s a good hike for kids…but I wouldn’t be bringing little ones. Now, the path up the brook can…

Givens Brook Falls
I thought there was not many places I hadn’t discovered on all my years living in and exploring Kings County. However,I keep finding new little gems, like Shingle Mill Falls This time we discovered Givens Brook Falls. Just south of Harbourville, this waterfall is apparently one of three along Givens Brook. We didn’t look for the others – we saw no trail that leads further down the brook. Directions Take Exit 15 (Berwick ) from Highway 101.At the top of the off ramp, turn right towards Harbourville. Drive about 9.5 km, and turn left on Barley Street. Drive approximately .5 km and pull off on the near side of the …

A Walk to Shingle Mill Falls
Shingle Mill Falls So, we are all in lockdown. The end is not really in sight… but we can travel around with our little bubble in our municipality. Hubby and I decided to see if we could find a new trail-not that easy since we have done a lot of them in Kings County. My phone search gave us Shingle Mills Falls. It was short walk but still very nice. It was one of the prettiest little falls I’ve seen in a while. As lockdown days go, it was a quite enjoyable one- new waterfall, topped off with a ice cream from Jonny’s CookHouse in Berwick on the…

Hike to Johnson River Falls
Johnson River Falls is an easy little hike not far from Waverly. It’s just a tad over 4.5 km round trip. The first part of it is along a dirt road. To get there, take exit 5 off the 102 highway. then turn right and go around the rotary. Take the 3rd exit (towards highway 118 ) Just up over the hill you will find Perrin Drive on the left. Drive to the very end. Lots of parking before the gate. The entrance to the trail should have a red and black trail maker ribbon like this: From there , cross a metal bridge, go up over a couple hills…

Economy River Falls
Updated June 3rd. The trail to the falls is now cleared and is not a jungle anymore-thanks to whoever did the bush whacking It’s been years since I have been to Economy Falls-can’t even guess at how long. But being semi retired means one can pick up and go when the mood strikes them-usually. That’s what we did on a recent beautiful spring day -just packed a lunch and headed out for beautiful Colchester County. and the hike to the falls. First though, we had to get to the trail head. The road was a tad rough. Then at the trail head, we had to practically bush wack our way…

Meandering to Meander River Falls
It was a perfect day to attempt to find the Meander River Falls-not too cold, not too hot, not raining and not icy, like the last attempt.. It was just right. Good thing too, because we spent an inordinate amount of time, while still heading in the general direction of where we thought the falls would be,climbing up and down the ravine in search of the trail.Great leg workout, though. There were sections that absolutely resembled a path where humans trod. Others I’m pretty sure were game trails…which we gamely followed. The path is clear once you step off the road, easily leading you to the falsehood that it will be that…

Hiking the Coney Brook Trail
Since experiencing the beautiful Skyline Trail along the Cabot Trail last September,we’ve been planning for almost a year to hike to do it again in October when the fall leaves would be at their most vibrant. Mother Nature had a different idea. Skyline was closed due to aggressive moose behavior-it is the rutting season after all. So. No Skyline. ð .alas. (However we were very lucky to see a pair of moose across from the Coney Brook trail head) But there are plenty of other hikes along the Cabot Trail, so after a bit of research, we decided to try the Coney Brook Trail. It’s not far from…

Summer Trip to Indian Falls Trail
Eureka! We found it! Last time we attempted to find Indian Falls we failed-ended up on the edge of someone’s woods. Rule #1 Just goes to show you can’t always trust Google directions. Seems like we had the same problem when we first tried to find Crystal Falls It’s actually not that hard. From Hwy 101 take Exit 13 to Route 12, head to New Ross. Turn right onto the Forties Road at New Ross and then turn left at Franey’s Corner (about 17 km) toward Parkdale and Maplewood. Indian Fall’s Park is about 18 km from Franey Corner, just a bit past LaHave River Campground. If you are coming from…

Hiking the Crystal Falls Trail
I first heard about the Crystal Falls trail when perusing fellow blogger Laura Churchill Duke’s write up on Valley Family Fun, so on a day off hubby and I decided to give it a go. Laura had already gotten good directions from the Kingston Visitor Centre-we used those. I have included them below. Autumn is my favorite time of year and I love it especially for getting outdoors and exploring. Directions to the Crystal Falls Trail Take Exit 17 to hwy 1 and continue west into Kingston, then turn left at the lights to Greenwood. Turn left at the lights in Greenwood ( across from Canadian Tire) and then right…
