    Hiking the Liscombe River Trail

Updated May 07/2026 Nova Scotia Eastern Shore is home to some gorgeous scenery and great trails, such as Taylor Head Provincial Park and the Gibraltar Trail Liscombe River Trail has been on my to-do list for several years now. I had no idea what is what like, but was willing to give it  a go. My other half and I decided on  a mini staycation at Liscombe Lodge with a couple of friends and our doggos. The plan was for the guys to fish and my friend and I would hike the 9.6 km trail. No problem. I’ve hiked harder and longer trails. Liscombe Lodge requires you sign out on…

Hiking the McIntosh Run- Osprey Trails

It was just starting to drizzle as we set out to head for  Halifax-no matter, we’ve hiked in the rain before. Today we were headed towards Spryfield, our destination-the McIntosh Run trails. In particular, the Osprey trails, Attic and Lou’s Basement. Osprey’s Attic and Lou’s Basement Trails It wasn’t our first visit to this neck of the McIntosh Run Watershed area, but hiking the Osprey Attic and Lou’s Basement trails were new to us. Located at the end of Alabaster Drive, there is  limited parking at the  cul-de-sac at the trail head. A detailed map there indicates the many ways to get lost, er, I mean the many trails in…

A Walk to Shingle Mill Falls

Shingle Mill Falls Updated April 26/2026   As early spring days go,  it was a quite enjoyable one- first a walk to Shingle Mill waterfall, topped off with a ice cream from Jonny’s CookHouse in Berwick on the way home. Not much  has changed since the last time we were here except of course the horrible wildfire that took place in 2025, during the drought. A lot of the area was scorched as we drove towards the waterfall and  I silently thanked the men and women who risked their lives fighting those fires.  A Bit of History Shingle Mill Falls was named after the lumber operations that operated in the…

5 Easy Hikes to Waterfalls in Nova Scotia

Everybody loves a waterfall, don’t they? I know I do. I’ve visited lots  and lots of waterfalls  in Nova Scotia and here are 5 I’ve found that are pretty easy hikes and kid friendly. In no particular order, here they are ! Borden Brook Falls, Blomidon Provincial Park, Kings County 3138 Pereau Rd, Canning, NS B0P 1H0 From the Blomidon Lower parking lot, cross the road onto the grass -you’ll see signs. Once in the woods, just follow the trail to the  waterfall. If you take  a left at the bridge just before the falls, you will follow the rest of the Borden Brook Trail, but…its steep, and muddy and…

    Strolling Kentville Ravine

Situated in the eastern end of  the Annapolis Valley  with the North Mountain as a backdrop , is the town of Kentville. It’s location was chosen for the Cornwallis River which meanders though the town. Kentville is proud of its recreational facilities-outdoor pool, arena, soccer and baseballs fields and more.  All these are meticulously looked after. I go there for the trails, mostly.   There are 5 to chose from: The Harvest Moon Trail which stretches for 110 km from Grand pre to Annapolis Royal. Popular for biking as well as hiking.Easy access to nearby towns along the way.   Miner’s Marsh- a short, looped trail great for birdwatchers ,walkers and…

    All About Black Bears

I Had  Questions About Bears At least one. Last night while lying in bed, I asked my husband a question. “Listen”,I said “l know what to do when meeting a black bear, but what if I need to use bear spray and the wind is blowing towards me? ” I had no desire to be blinded by capsicum spray nor be a snack. I wasn’t really looking for an answer. Nor did I get one.But I decided today to look it up, just to satisfy my curiosity . I had idly wondered if one should somehow, someway wriggle themselves around so the wind was in a more favorable position – blowing…

Hiking Cape Split During Mud Season

Updated March 18/26   The temperature was perfect as we wound our way along the trail. We encountered some big fluffy snowflakes followed by  sunny skies.  All were welcome. I’ve hiked  Cape Split numerous times but this is only the second time I did the the new loop. I had done some research and was expecting mud and I was not disappointed to find, it was indeed, mud season. The  newly looped trail, is 13.2 km, not including distance to  viewpoints, and runs through old growth forest with some new scenic look offs. Scots Bay trail-the new section, offers views of the Bay of Fundy while the ‘old’ trail-the Minas…

    Hiking Ruby’s Trail

Hiking Ruby’s Trail in New Ross I’d heard about this trail for awhile before I actually put boots on it. Just heard about it-and that it is was in New Ross. That’s all. When our hiking group actually made the trip to hike it we found that it IS delightful. The history of the trail shows the power of community support and love. Ruby’s Trail is a gift back to the  community  for the outpouring of  kindness and caring shown after the heartbreaking of death of 1 year old Ruby Webber.  A rare fatal neurological disorder would take little Ruby in May 2017. The Trail The trail winds through the…
