Farmers Family Diner -A Restaurant Review
Farmer’s Family Diner in Aylesford is one of the places, well, you notice the sign but never have time to stop in. Well, this time we did stop in- better than making supper right? What caught our eye on the menu was the “Colossal Club Sandwich” Now, I don’t usually orders sandwiches and stuff like that in a restaurant-why would I, when I can easily make that at home? (Don’t ask me if I do make it at home.) But, well, “colossal” seemed to taunt us. We had to try it.We wanted to see if Farmer’s Family Diner can live up to it’s promise.. The club for one was about…

The River Wild-Shubenacadie River Rafting in Nova Scotia
Shubenacadie River Rafting “Nae man can tether time nor tide…” Robbie Burns immortal words struck me as unforgivably appropriate. The powerful tides of Nova Scotia’s Minas Basin are, even as we make our way to the tiny hamlet of Maitland, relentlessly snaking its way towards the mouth of the Shubenacadie River. The Shubenacadie-one of the top five rivers for rafting in Canada- is the one we will be on today. In 1995,Maitland, a once thriving shipbuilding community, was designated the province’s first Heritage Conservation District. Here you will find Lawrence House Museum-one of the area’s many beautiful 19th century homes and the 1874 launching site of the “WD Lawrence”, Canada’s largest…

Shore Club Hubbards-A Restaurant Review
In 2018,The Shore Club in Hubbards is celebrating 81 years of offering visitors and locals alike the experience of an old-fashioned lobster supper in an old-fashioned dance hall. For those of you who haven’t had that experience -it’s a must do. You won’t go away hungry, I guarantee that. And, the servers, though busy, were fantastic. For the price of your lobster, steak, chicken or veggie dish, you get all you can eat mussels, all you can eat roll and salad which includes pasta and potato salad, some kind of grain-maybe quinoa? and all the fixings to make a mile high tossed salad,,,although I did not notice any dressings. I …

Mic Mac Bar and Grill-A Restaurant Review
Would you expect to find a busy restaurant sharing a parking lot with a RV rental? Well we didn’t-didn’t even notice Mic Mac Bar and Grill the few times we drove our visiting friends down to pick up their vacation RV. Once we did notice it, we thought it would be easy enough to find again. My brother is a former Halifax cabbie and he knows where everything is-all the good restaurants, shortcuts and back roads. We should really ask him about shortcuts, ya know? The first time we all went to the Mic Mac, hubby and I took the long route along the 102 towards Truro and got off…

10 Flower Gardens You Should Visit This Summer
Note: I would visit the Rhododendrons as soon as possible at the Kentville Research Station I scoff at the suggestion of having any kind of a green thumb-really I do. But for some strange reason, I feel compelled over the last several years to dig, plant and even-horrors! weed a bit of a flower garden. Why is this so shocking, you ask? I grew up on a farm.Need I really say anymore? But I will say more. My mother worked outside the home. My father was crippled with extreme arthritis .We gardened to sell produce and survive-long before farmer’s markets and U Picks were a staple in Nova Scotia. You…

So, the Apple Blossom festival begins tomorrow and there are lots of events happening all across the valley. But what about the apple blossoms, you ask. Right. Well that is what it is all about. But, it won’t be too long before they are out in all their glorious splendor. So, without further ado, here are my five best places to see the apple blossoms in the Annapolis Valley from east to west. Click the title for directions. Also, you may be interested in…

Just Us Coffee Roaster – Restaurant Review
Recently, I met a friend for coffee at Just Us Coffee Cafe in Grand Pre.Just Us is a play on words-a group of good friends believe that although they were without substantial assets they could still make a difference-making sure the brand they were creating stood for social justice. This company ushered in the fair trade coffee business in the Valley in 1995. The head office and roastery is located in the same building, as well as a small coffee museum. If you’ve been there at all you know they have a smorgasbord of products for sale- from coffee beans to coffee makers, raw sugars, chocolate and more. Located right off…

Part 2- 26 Nova Scotia Day Trips I to P
Here we go with part 2 of this three part series of Nova Scotia day trips . An alphabet soup of exploration, if you will. Sometimes, it’s hard to pick between several places with the same first letter, and sometimes, it’s hard to dig up one at all (just wait until I get to ‘z’ next week.) I always try to refer to places I’ve actually been so I can give honest information. For now, have a look and make some notes for your upcoming days off this summer. Happy Planning!
