Strolling Kentville Ravine

Situated in the eastern end of the Annapolis Valley with the North Mountain as a backdrop , is the town of Kentville. It’s location was chosen for the Cornwallis River which meanders though the town.

Kentville is proud of its recreational facilities-outdoor pool, arena, soccer and baseballs fields and more. All these are meticulously looked after.

I go there for the trails,mostly.

Giving itself back to the soil-Kentville Ravine

There are 5 to chose from:

The Harvest Moon Trail which stretches for 110 km from Grand pre to Annapolis Royal. Popular for biking as well as hiking.Easy access to nearby towns along the way.

Miner’s Marsh- a short, looped trail great for birdwatchers ,walkers and runners. Skating is available here once the ice on the pond is deemed thick enough

The Kentville Bird Sanctuary . It can be confusing do to side trails and what not- Good idea is to use Alltrails or another tracker if you’re visiting for the first time.
The Gorge-well known as a favorite for mountain bikers ,having hosted the Canada Cup several times.
And my personal favorite- The Kentville Ravine

Why the Ravine my favorite Kentville trail?

The Ravine is not a trail for running…well you can if you wish, but to me its one for exploring.

It’s a trail you can meander along, listening to the whispering of the brook as it flows by.

It’s a trail for walking with kids – chasing them out of the water, looking for big sticks,collecting acorns and pine corns, watching for squirrels.

Its a trail for taking photos of moss, bridges, rocks and trees and for smelling the damp earth after a rain.

The Ravine spans roughly a 3.5 km loop with about 115 meters of elevation gain, easily double for kids and adults.

The trail has changed since the devastation that down many trees a few years ago- it now veers away from the little waterfall-I haven’t tried to get to the falls yet, myself.

There are many blow downs, but all have been removed from the trail itself.

The trail that led from the parking lot across from Eaves Hollow is closed .

It’s still perfect for a slower pace.

Winter has also left it’s mark on the trail-although it is well maintained spring through fall, and accessible usually in winter at your own risk. I suggest ice cleats for the down hill.
