Hike to Johnson River Falls
Johnson River Falls is an easy little hike not far from Waverly. It’s just a tad over 4.5 km round trip. The first part of it is along a dirt road. To get there, take exit 5 off the 102 highway. then turn right and go around the rotary. Take the 3rd exit (towards highway 118 ) Just up over the hill you will find Perrin Drive on the left. Drive to the very end. Lots of parking before the gate. The entrance to the trail should have a red and black trail maker ribbon like this: From there , cross a metal bridge, go up over a couple hills…

An Evening Paddle with East Coast Outfitters
I can never get enough kayak paddling in. Stuff like work gets in the way. However, I did grab an opportunity to take my two daughters -in-law and head out for the Ladies Night Paddle with East Coast Outfitters recently. I’ve been out with them before but I enjoy trying out new adventures such as this Ladies Night and it did not disappoint. I love a leisurely paddle where I can take a moment to see, hear and smell what’s around me on the water. This is the ambiance I want others to experience in any outdoor venue-woods, water, whatever. Although this paddle started off as a…

5 Beaches Worth a Visit this Winter
Updated March 13 2019 As I write this, Nova Scotia is suffering through an intense cold spell- minus 12 but feeling like minus 20. Snow is expected to start in an hour or so. The last thing you’d probably be thinking about is checking out any of our beaches. But we Nova Scotians are hardy people. And not only that, there are myriad reasons to avoid staying cooped up all winter. In winter, getting outside as much as possible;e help fights seasonal depression. Add to the the peace giving calm of ocean waters and a trip to the beach seems a great way of combating the winter doldrums, just when…

Forest Lakes Trails -Hike to Cameron Lake
Don’t you love Facebook events? It’s an opportunity to find trails I would probably never know about. This was the case on a recent frosty Sunday when a couple of friends and I took advantage of a guided trail along the Forest Lakes Trail system in Ardoise. Forest Lakes is a country club with luxury seasonal and overnight housing rentals and real estate. Out of my price range ? Absolutely. No matter. The trails are open to everyone. I suspect this was a marketing maneuver to get people up close and personal with their property. And why not? But with my my less than stylish hiking gear-I was wearing my…

Hiking the Gibraltar Rock Trail
We stumbled across this trail when taking a drive to Musquodobit and wanted to get out and stretch our legs-all 8 of them-we had the dog with us. Now, I will freely admit I am not much for hiking converted rail beds, preferring something more woodsy or along the water. So, when we spied the sign for the Gibraltar Rock Trail Loop, we decided it may be fun. And it was fun. Fun as in up and up and up some more. Over rocks and boulders and roots and along narrow pathways. It’s listed as ‘challenging’ on some websites, ‘moderate’ on others. Let’s just say I was able to climb it…

Strawberry U-Picks in Nova Scotia
It’s that time again. Strawberry Time.Shortcake time. Jam time. Time to fill the freezer with these luscious red berries so we have a reminder of sweet summer days in the dead of winter. That means it’s time to hit the local strawberry U-Picks. Only two problems with that. Websites that list U-Picks are often woefully out of date, and The major frost we had a few weeks back really did a number on our fragile, fledgling blossoms and baby plants. So much so that some producers aren’t sure whether that will be open to the public at all in 2018. Hah. I’ve done some work on your behalf.(and mine,…

Returning to Kejimkujik Seaside Adjunct
Hubby tells me it’s been 17 years since we last scrambled our way along the trail to Kejimkujik Seaside Adjunct. He was 50. I would have been 46. Yes, we are THAT old. Over 2500 years ago, the now submerged sections of Kejimkujik Seaside Adjunct was home to ancestors of the Mi’kmaq . Since then, it’s rocky and barren landscape lent itself to few successful occupations, however foundations of a large sheep farm are still found along the trails . You’ll find glacial erratics- large granite boulders left by receding glaciers-sticking up out of the bogs and fossilized tree stumps which may be 1000’s of years old. The bogs are home to…
