My 7 Wonders of Nova Scotia
InI recently stumbled across an old CBC article listing the 7 Wonders of Nova Scotia, as part of a greater 7 Wonders of Canada. These were: Peggy’s Cove Annapolis Royal Elizabeth LeFort’s Hooked Rugs The Halifax Public Gardens Oak Island (treasure) Fortress of Louisbourg The criteria was thus: Essential ‘Canadian-ness’ – historically significant, character filled, valued Originality/uniqueness of the pitch and place Spectacular physical site or amazing human creation Ability to inspire Canada is indeed beautiful, from sea to shining sea. And it was a tough job to choose just 7 from Nova Scotia, studying nominations, online voting and adherence to criteria. I get that. And I get that everyone…

A Winter’s Morning in Fishermen’s Cove
It’s been a while since I have written about anything at all, but with the start of a fresh year and decade, I hope to put my writers block/burnout/outright laziness behind. Being out and about this week has me all fired up to get to my laptop. I have been wanting to go see the Lobster Trap Tree at Fishermen’s Cove and made a point of getting down before it was disassembled for the season. While it was daylight and not as beautiful as it would have been all lit up in the evening, it was still pretty unique and charming. In fact, the holiday spirit was all around, no…

Atlantic View Trail
The Atlantic View Trail is located within the Halifax Regional Municipality near Lawrencetown -it stretches for almost 20 km round trip along the abandoned Musquodoboit trail bed and so far we have only done part of this beautiful coastal trail section – from the end of highway 207 just past Three Fathom Harbour Road in Porters Lake. Entrance can also be gained from the opposite end, at the Lawrencetown Community Centre. I’d rate this trail as easy (find other easy Halifax hikes here) the only difficult thing about it is it’s length-and how far you go is up to you. Just remember-you need to walk back too.The trail is …

The Adventure Begins! Biking the Harvest Moon Trail
October 14 We’re crossing the Harvest Moon Trail Adventure off our bucket lists. Tomorrow morning ,we will swing our legs across our sturdy bikes and begin the 110 km trek to Grand pre . That’s the plan anyway. Today will be preparation-not that there is much to do- there is only so much you can take in a small back pack. We booked a hotel halfway along (55 km) After all, we are’t young anymore. I may not receive the OAS yet, but I can see it from where I’m standing. My partner-in-crime in this adventure is my long time friend Grace- who I have known since school, and who is…

7 Great Ways to View The Fall Colors
I love fall-everything is brighter and crisper. No humidity. No mosquitoes. It makes me feel like actually DOING something. Not work. No. I mean fun things. And there are a lot of choices. Hikes. Kayaking. Just a drive with a stop for a quick fall picnic. Right now, leaves are just starting to turn in some spots. In another week or so and everything will be gor-ge-ous. So, here we go: Drive this Fall If you are out for a Sunday drive on any day of the week, a beautiful spot -even without the reds and yellows of fall is the drive along White Rock Road in Kings County.…

Bring Your Bike to Big Tancook
One of the best things about bringing your bike over to Big Tancook Island is -you get to the food first. You can roll right off the ferry and pump you legs up the hill past the couples, the families and the old folks with walkers and canes. I jest,of course. While it’s true Tancook has limited choices for restaurants, and while it’s also true food is usually everyone’s first stop, you could just as easily whiz by them and take a swing around the island itself.
