Hiking Ruby’s Trail
Hiking Ruby’s Trail in New Ross
I’d heard about this trail for awhile before I actually put boots on it. Just heard about it-and that it is was in New Ross. That’s all.
When our hiking group actually made the trip to hike it we found that it IS delightful.
The history of the trail shows the power of community support and love.
Ruby’s Trail is a gift back to the community for the outpouring of kindness and caring shown after the heartbreaking of death of 1 year old Ruby Webber. A rare fatal neurological disorder would take little Ruby in May 2017.
The Trail
The trail winds through the family Christmas tree farm for 2.5 km one way, before tracing back to the trail head. A special scenic look off atop Porcupine Hill – Ruby’s Spot- gives a lovely view of of New Ross. There is a bit of a climb from the bottom.

The magic starts at the trail head.
The first thing you’ll notice is lady bugs. Yes, lady bugs. Brightly painted rocks peeking out in between rocks and on top of logs. Red sign posts…in fact almost everything is painted red and gives your heart a lift just being there.
Farther along, up the hill, you find Twig’s Chalet. The story is that Twig was chosen by the big, jolly guy himself-Santa Claus -to maintain the magic the balsam fir industry in Nova Scotia. Twig now lives in New Ross. Peek in Twigs window-it’s quite homey.

At the top of the hill sits a brightly painted gazebo -Ruby’s Ladybug Lodge . There are hand made lawn chairs and a bonfire spots and it’s here where they celebrate – such as an annual Mobility Celebration and the New Ross Christmas Festival.
