My Five Favorite Fall Hikes

You might have heard me say before-Fall is my favorite time of year . Mugginess is gone, mosquitoes and their friends the blackflies have gone (unfortunately the ticks have stuck around) and there is a sweet, crisp smell to the air.

This is the time to get on the trail!

In no particular order, here are my 5 favorite fall hikes!

Kejimkujik National Park and Historic Site -Hemlock and Hardwoods Trail

A 5k loops that showcases 300 year old hemlocks, interspersed with boardwalks for your hiking enjoyment and to protect the sensitive roots of these majestic giants.

Please note, I love Keji and it has many wonderful trails.

Try Mills Falls for a shorter hike, waterfall, and covered picnic area. (2.6 return from Visitor Centre Trailhead)

Open year around with limited facilities after Thanksgiving weekend.

Park Passes are needed until after Thanksgiving.

Both are easy

Moses Mountain

Highway 14 (the Chester Road) Drive just over 11 km and you will come to a sign that says Mill Section. Start looking for civic numbers on the right – Civic address # 2955

There’s a small parking lot at the end of the drive. Don’t park inside the gate.

Moses Mountain is a 3.9k  round trip  but don’t let the short distance fool you-it has tough climb to to the top. But it’s worth it.

Watch out for roots going up and rocks slipping out from under your feet on the climb down.

Savor a hot drink from your thermos, while gazing at Falls Lake below and teeny, tiny cars winding their way along Highway 14.

Turn right and start you hike.

Moderate-Hard climb

Rogart Mountain

Rogart Mountain trail Begins and ends at the Sugar Moon Farm parking lot (221 Alex MacDonald Road)

Another climb and a good one. But its a  lovely hike especially at the top with nice views, a waterfall on on the way down (if you are going clockwise) and if you hiking on the weekend, a chance for a delicious breakfast at Sugar Moon Farm

Moderate-Hard Climb

Cape Split

999 Cape Split Road, Canning, NS B0P 1H0

Cape Split is a 13.2 round trip, not including look offs, but the view at the end is stunning. Allow enough time to enjoy it. Some uphills. Outhouses at trail head, The one on the trail may be locked after Thanksgiving .People are on the trail all year.

Please keep your dog leashed for their own safety.

9 Mile River Trail-Pitcher Plant Trail

1143 Enfield Rd, Nine Mile River, NS B2S 2T7

This is a sweet little trail-which can be added onto by continuing  hiking the Hemlock trail.

Lots of parking at trailhead.
