A Late Fall Hike at Blomindon Provincial Park

Finally, I have made good on a promise I have been making to myself all summer. It took a few months, but I got back for  a late fall hike @ Blomidon.

Lake Fall Hike @ Blomidon-starting the climb

Normally, I am up there on a regular basis, but this year-not since March. 🙁

My usual plan for a quick 1 ½-2 hour hike  is to climb the lower section of the Jodrey trail, and then walk up and over to descend along Borden Brook.

Lake Fall Hike @ Blomidon- love the roots. Yes I’m weird.

Not this time.

You may have noticed we’ve had a bit of a dreary November. It rained yesterday,in fact. There is a section of Borden Brook that is quite steep …and just dirt. That trail can be wet at the best of times, with very few trees and whatnot to break my fall, should I slide down this slippery slope with my feet out from under… Share on X

But I did not have to skip the falls!

The lower section of Jodrey is just over a kilometer-and it’s pretty much straight up. Coming out from the top onto the road, it’s roughly a kilometer walk down the winding mountain road until you come to a Do Not Park sign on the right.

On the other side of the guard rail is a trail that goes right to the waterfall. And they were gorgeous today! What the rain taketh away in sure footedness, it gave back in beauty.

Keep in mind that you can also access these falls by simply walking across the road from the lower parking lot and taking that trail. You’ll see signs that will point you to the falls-keep straight on the trail if your intention is not to climb up the Borden Brook trail.

This is what I do when I go on a hike-no matter how short.

  • I tell someone where I am going-and what trails I’m planning on taking as well as an idea of when you should be back.
  • I take a day pack and pack a first aid kit with water purifying tablets-in case I need more water than I bring, band-aids and such, headlamp, tick spray-yes the buggers are still around-and a cheap survival blanket
  • A lighter
  • Navigation? I know these trails very well, but I use the Gaia app when I am not familiar with the hike. Someday, I hope to become more proficient with map reading. Today is not that day.
  • Some food, Today I took a sandwich and I had  a protein bar with me. Emma shared my sandwich . I always have a collapsible water such for her too.
  • Water
  • Extra clothing. I usually run warm when I hike, but I still take extra. You’ll cool off quickly when you stop.

And also

Once the park is closed (usually right after Thanksgiving) the gate to the actual park is closed. That means taking with the Jodrey trail or Borden Brook to get to the top .

Here are some distances for the trails within Blomindon Park.

There is also a great new toilet since the last time  I was there
